Heel pain is one of the most common complaints we see at Cornerstone Foot & Ankle—and two of the most frequent causes are plantar fasciitis and heel spurs. While the symptoms can feel similar, the underlying causes and treatments can be quite different.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis occurs when the thick band of tissue running along the bottom of your foot (the plantar fascia) becomes inflamed. This often results in stabbing pain near the heel, especially with the first steps in the morning or after long periods of rest.

Common causes:

  • Tight calf muscles

  • Poor arch support

  • Overuse or standing for long hours

  • Weight gain

What Is a Heel Spur?

A heel spur is a bony growth on the underside of the heel bone, often caused by long-term strain on muscles and ligaments. While many people with heel spurs don’t experience pain, others may feel discomfort when standing or walking.

Important to note:
Heel spurs and plantar fasciitis often occur together—but not always.
