Gout is a type of arthritis which occurs when high levels of uric acid create crystals that get caught and accumulate in the joints. It is usually sudden with severe pain, redness and tenderness in the joint. Gout usually affects the big toe joint but it can affect any joint in the foot and body overall.

A gout diet helps in decreasing uric acid build up within the joints. Your body makes uric acid after it breaks down a substance called purine, which is found in many foods. So one key to managing your gout is to lower the amount of purines you eat. Although this is not a cure, it lowers the risk of experiencing a gout attack.

No specific eating plan will completely prevent flare-ups, but a good gout diet will help you:

  • Reach a healthy weight

  • Set and stick to good eating habits

  • Limit foods with purines

  • Add foods that can help control uric acid levels

Foods to Avoid if You Have Gout

  • Alcohol, especially beer and hard liquor.
  • Red meat, lamb, and pork
  • Seafood, especially shellfish like shrimp, lobster, mussels, anchovies, and sardines
  • High-fructose products like soda and some juices, cereal, ice cream, candy, and fast food

Best Foods for a Gout Diet

  • Fresh fruits (low in fructose) and vegetables (leafy greens)
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Whole grains
  • Low-fat and nondairy products
  • Eggs (in moderation)
  • Plant-based oils: Including canola, coconut, olive and flax oils.
  • Potatoes, rice, bread, and pasta

It is also a good idea to drink a lot of fluids, 8-16 cups a day. At least half of what you drink should be water and try to stay away from sugary drinks like soda and fruit juice. Limiting alcohol consumption can also aid in preventing flare ups. While a healthy diet can help control how much uric acid is in your system, you may still need medicine to prevent future attacks. Talk with your doctor about all your treatment options.
