Toenail fungal infections, also known as onychomycosis, affect approximately 40 million people in the United States. Toenail fungus is usually acquired as a result of genetics, immunocompromised diseases, aging, trauma or poor foot care. Patients with toenail fungus may experience thick, brittle and discolored nails that may split and often become painful. There might be an unpleasant smell and appearance of the nail which can get worse if left untreated.  The most common complications of the fungal nail infection are recurrent fungal infection to the skin, ingrown nails and difficulty wearing shoes.

While many other treatments are available to treat toenail fungus, many are not as effective, safe or minimally invasive as laser treatment. Medications often do not fully remove all traces of fungus and frequently result in recurrence. Often specialists combine laser therapy with oral or topical therapy including KeryFlex Nail Restoration System™ to protect the laser treated nail in order to thoroughly treat and remove the infection.

Laser Treatment

During the laser procedure, the energy is delivered directly to the affected toe to remove the germs embedded in the nail bed that cause toenail fungus and other types of infections. There is no pain associated with this procedure and it usually takes about 10 minutes to perform the procedure on each toe. Laser procedures performed to treat toenail infections are considered safe for most patients, with no major risks or side effects currently known.

KeryFlex™ Treatment

The KeryFlex™ application is usually done immediately after the laser treatment to create a seal to prevent reinfection and also to create a natural looking nail in a very simple way. In as little as 15 minutes a realistic natural-looking nail can be created for you by our Doctors, who have been specially trained in the KeryFlex Nail Restoration System™.  KeryFlex™ uses polymer resins and special activators to create a durable, yet flexible artificial toenail.  It is a perfect solution for fungal nails, nails damaged from injuries, brittle, splitting and discolored toenails.

These treatments allow patients to walk and resume their regular activities immediately after treatment. Results will usually appear as a new toenail grows within three to six months after treatment. Most patients achieve successful results from this procedure and do not need any additional treatment.
