How is ankle sprain treated?

Depending on the severity of your sprain, the doctor may put you in a boot or a cast for up to 4 weeks, then a brace and you may need therapy to get your strength back. In some instances, you may need surgery to repair a torn ligament from your injury.

What can one do to prevent sprains?

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Do not continue to play sports when you are tired.
  • Warm up and stretch before exercising and playing sports.
  • Do not wear shoes that are old and worn out on one side.
  • Wear the appropriate shoes for the sports you are playing.
  • Watch where you run, make sure it’s flat.
